Student Spotlight: Daniel and Verónica on Traveling to Montreal from Mexico in the Middle of Winter

Written by E-QIP123 on February 27, 2020

Every year, E-QIP has the privilege of hosting young people from around the globe who make Montreal their temporary home while they boost their communication skills in English and French (and their career and educational prospects).

We've welcomed students from six continents and countless countries, but when it comes to young people on school breaks, one country has sent us more students than any other: Mexico.

Studying in a new country can be a lesson in culture shock for anyone, and that's especially true for the Mexican students who visit over winter break—many of whom will experience frigid, Canadian-style winter conditions for the first time in Montreal.

But it's not just the cold that can make a few weeks in Montreal a life-changing experience. Meet two of our recent Mexican alumni who shared, in their own words, their thoughts on language learning and new adventures in Montreal.

Daniel studied in Montreal for three weeks this winter. In addition to the fresh perspective he gained from speaking English, Daniel also gained a newfound appreciation for photography.

What made you choose E-QIP?
The place, the weather and the adventure of travelling abroad.

How do you feel about E-QIP's conversation-focused approach to teaching?
It's good, all the teachers are prepared and know how to communicate well with you.

Is there anything you think your peers/teachers would be surprised to learn about you?
Yes, there is. I'm a Taekwondo teacher.

Did you discover any new hobbies or interests in Montreal?
Yes, I discovered an interest in photography.

Where do you see yourself in the future? What are your next steps for language learning?
I'll be living abroad and speaking many languages. I want to improve my English skills and then learn other languages.

Have you noticed any changes in your life since you started learning English?
Yes for sure. I can see the life with a different perspective, because now I can read and understand English.

What advice would you give to potential students who are nervous about the challenge of taking on a new language?
I just want to say, just do it. Be brave. You will not regret it. I know it can be difficult, but if it is not now, when?

Veronica also spent three weeks in Montreal, and also gained a new love of photography (and snow!) while she was here.

Which language are you learning and why?
I learned English because all my life I have been practicing it and because I want to explore the world and the common language is the English.

Did anything about language learning at E-QIP surprise you?
I think the way that you (E-QIP) teach is perfect because 100% of the time it's a conversation, so I can really learn the language.

How do you feel about E-QIP's conversation-focused approach to teaching?
At the beginning I was so nervous because I've never had a real conversation with people [whose] native language is English, but I think it's a really good idea because it's a better way to learn.

Did you discover any new hobbies or interests in Montreal?
Probably play in the snow, although in Mexico we don't have it. I am a leisure photographer, but Montreal made me [want to] try to improve and become a professional.

What are your next steps for language learning?
Perfect my English and start learning Italian or French.

What advice would you give to potential students who are nervous about the challenge of taking on a new language?
Take a chance and go for that language. These are unique opportunities that can open many doors (work as well as personally). It also gives you the opportunity to travel to other countries to meet new cultures.
